- How do I choose a security company, they all seem to offer the same things? Security companies can be very different. You want to use an established company that has been in business for at least 10 years. For security systems, they should offer verified audio and video verification security solutions. The Central Station should be UL certified.
- Is there any difference between different access control systems? Yes there are; there are Central Station Managed systems which take all the work and cost out of maintaining users, schedules, hardware, software etc. There are hosted/cloud systems that allow you to manage the system remotely for multiple facilities. Systems that require you to buy on-site hardware and software are a thing of the past – avoid those. Get a proximity based system for fobs and access cards.
- Fire systems are very important as they are life safety, how do I pick a reputable vendor? Make sure you system meets fire code, the local fire marshal dictates what you need in accordance with NFPA guidelines. Your fire system provider should know local fire code and make sure you system is compliant. It may be required to be inspected, make sure your vendor has certified state inspectors.
- I know there are analog and IP cameras, which are best for the camera system? Analog cameras are inexpensive and could meet your need. They are not effective beyond 30-40 feet and you cannot zoom in on the image, best for indoor coverage of smaller areas. IP and mega-pixel camera are coming down in price every day and use Cat 5 cable which is much less expensive than coaxial cable. Mega-pixel cameras come in many flavors from panoramic, wide angle cameras to cameras with super zoom abilities with amazing clarity.
You will need hybrid digital recorder to use analog and IP cameras on the same system. If you use all IP cameras you can use a network video recorder which is less than a hybrid. The longer you want to store video the larger hard drive you will need. Hard drive space is cheap, so get enough for at least 30 days. Make sure you by a Digital Video Recorder/Network Video Recorder that can be added on to as you grow, don’t max it out right away.
Summary
A good company will consult and educate on what you need and why. With false alarm ordinances everywhere you want a verified audio or video solution. Your security system should work with your access control system seamlessly without a separate control panel. Proximity fobs should be warranted for life. Your fire system should be on the same platform as your security and access control system. You do not want to have to manage and maintain multiple systems; your staff will struggle to use them properly. 65% of all false alarms are created by the users.
CCTV and camera systems are going to cost the most but provide the most benefit learn the differences between analog and IP camera; generally you will want to use mega-pixel cameras outdoors. Use a name brand Digitial Viedo Recorder/Network Video Recorder with at least a 2 year warranty. Make sure to get a Service Agreement for all systems, it will save you money in the long run.
