You might have heard
about the Purge here in Louisville. Inspired by the recent film, teenagers around the city posted posters calling for of legalized crime.
In the film, the government agrees to allow all forms of crime for a 12-hour period once each year. During that 12-hour period – dubbed “The Purge” – anyone who wants to commit a crime, can do so without fear of legal consequences. Meanwhile, everyone else has to protect themselves without help from law enforcement.
The Purge here in Louisville wasn’t sanctioned by the government. According to the police department, they took all Purge threats seriously and intended to fully prosecute anyone who broke the law during the night. The city and surrounding area responded as well, thousands tuning in the police scanner like it was the hottest show on TV.
Thankfully, Sonitrol customers were already prepared if the threats turned out to be real.
1. Access control
The first level of security for many of our customers is access control. Access control allows you to manage when your doors can open and close and who can access them when they’re locked.
As a result, facility managers could keep their doors open for business during the day but close automatically for the Purge in the evening. This kept unwelcome visitors from wandering into the facility after hours, all without needing to manually lock any doors.
2. Burglar systems
Linked to access control, a burglar system can automatically arm after closing time. This puts the system on full alert. With Sonitrol, this could include door and window contact points, motion detectors, and photo beams like the kind you can’t cross without tripping an alarm. It could also include Sonitrol’s patented audio detection equipment that sensors abnormal sounds in an environment, like breaking glass or voices after closing.
Each of these pieces of equipment is designed for specific functions in the system. Together, they keep out intruders or notify our Central Station monitoring team if there’s a problem, with rowdy teenagers or otherwise.
3. Surveillance video
Video cameras could watch, day and night, for suspicious activity. Some of the cameras could be monitored in real time to see if there’s a problem. Other cameras work better for review, in case there was an issue and authorities needed to identify what happened. In either case, surveillance products can add the final layer of security by providing a way to see what happened on video.
As it turned out, the Purge here in Louisville didn’t cause too many problems, besides the nuisance. Those who were already prepared, though, didn’t need to worry about their facilities. And since it wasn’t an issue, they didn’t dispatch on any false alarms either.
The Purge might not have caused problems, but you never known when something or someone will. How many facilities would have been caught without proper security if the Purge had occurred?
