home break in-resized-600It is vacation time. Time for family’s to enjoy some time to explore their favorite vacation destination. With all the planning and excitement make sure to follow some simple steps that will give you peace of mind while you away.

1. Stop your newspaper and mail while you are gone.Leaving these items to pile up is just asking for trouble.

2. Home Security System – If you don’t have one, consider having one installed. Home systems are very affordable often not costing you any upfront installation and should only cost you about a dollar a day to have it monitored by a certified central station. If you have a home security system make sure to you have yard signs and decals placed promantly around your home. Notify your security provider you will be out of town and give them the name and phone number of someone they can contact in the event of a problem.

3. Don’t brag about your vacation plans on soicial media. Save your posts and pictures of your vaction for when you return. If you want to stay in touch through social media make sure you turn you location notifier off while you are gone. This is one item people tend to not think about but gives criminals a wat to know when you are away.

3. Avoiding being locked out can lead to being broken into. Remove any keys you may have hidden around the outside of your home. This may help you when you lock yourself out of your house. The hidden “key rock” can be spotted by a home invader rather quickly. Consider installing dead bolt locks that require you to use a key to lock the door when you leave. Also, think about replacing your keyed locks with a keypad lock.

4. Motion Lighting Installing motion sensing lights by the main entry points of your home insures that potential invaders can’t sneak up unnoticed. The sudden turning on of the light can be enough to send them running. Placing interior lights on timers is another great idea. Doing this even when you’re home helps establish a visible routine so anyone casing your house won’t be able to tell when you’re away. An added bonus is that it means you never have to come home to a dark house.

5.Windows – During the summer months we like to open our windows and let some fresh air in. Before leaving make sure all windows are closed and securely locked. This is one of the most obvious tips for home security during the summer months but many people overlook it. Burglar-proof glass on windows makes it more difficult to enter through without possibly be heard or noticed.

Following these simple steps will let you enjoy your vacation. Otherwise, your happy return home could be your worst nightmare.
